About

Avery Holshouser, a Seattle-based artist living in Hawai‘i, utilizes oil painting as her primary medium. Inspired by the vibrant colors of Maui, she continues to explore themes of connection, identity, and fluidity with bold and bright strokes. Having graduated with a BA in Fine Arts in the spring of June 2025, she plans on continuing her education in the pursuit of a Masters in Fine Arts.

Through oil painting, I challenge the patriarchal gaze embedded in art history by centering the female and queer body as complex, autonomous, and worthy of safety. Traditionally a tool of dominance, oil becomes a medium of reclamation in my hands.

I explore the tension between interior experience and external perception, using vibrant color and gestural mark-making to express the emotional weight of embodiment. Symbols like the uterus are reclaimed as acts of resistance, especially amid threats to reproductive justice.

My work creates space for new ways of seeing—tender, defiant, and grounded in feminist agency.
